a lot of และ lots of แปลว่า มากมาย

- ทั้งสองคำเป็นคำที่ไม่ทางการ ปกติใช้กับนามพหูพจน์ หรือ นามนับไม่ได้ จะใช้ตัวไหนก็ได้

e.g.    A lot of books are on the table.
Lots of books are on the table.
A lot of my friends want to go to your party.

A lot of money was left on the table.
A lot of time is needed to learn English.

** Verb จะตามคำนาม ตรงนี้ต้องระวังนะครับ

* จริงๆ แล้ว ควรจะใช้ a great deal of หรือ much (ใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้) หรือ
a large number of หรือ many (ใช้กับนามพหูพจน์) แทนซึ่งเป็นคำที่ทางการกว่า เช่น

A great deal of books are on the table.
A great deal of milk is left in your glass.

การใช้ A number of และ the number of

A number of ตามด้วยกริยา พหูพจน์
e.g.      A number of people have gone to Siam Paragon
A number of people are waiting for the bus

หลักโดยทั่วไปของการเลือกใช้ a, an กับ the อยู่ที่ความเฉพาะเจาะจงของสิ่งที่จะกล่าวถึง จริงๆ แล้วปัญหาส่วนใหญ่คือ เมื่อไหร่ที่จะไม่ต้องใช้ article เลย

ใช้ a เมื่อพูดถึงนามทั่วๆ ไป เอกพจน์ และ นามนับได้
ใช้ an เมื่อพูดถึงนามทั่วๆ ไป เอกพจน์ และ นามนับได้ นำหน้านามที่ออกเสียงขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ a e i o u (ระวัง h และ u เช่น An hour, An honor แต่ใช้ A university)
ใช้ The เมื่อพูดถึงนามเฉพาะเจาะจง เมื่อไหร่ที่มี the นำหน้าจะรู้เสมอว่า กล่าวถึงอะไร

e.g.

• Can I borrow a pen? ขอยืมปากกา 1 ด้าม (ด้ามไหนก็ได้)
• Can you buy me an egg? ช่วยซื้อไข่ 1 ฟองให้หน่อย (ไข่ทั่วไป แบบก็ได้)
• Could you pass me the pepper? ช่วยส่ง พริกไทย ขวดนั้นให้หน่อย (พริกไทยที่เห็นๆ กันอยู่บนโต๊ะ)

* ขอเน้นย้ำ เรื่อง the อีกที
สามารถใช้ the ในครั้งที่สองเมื่อได้มีการใช้ a หรือ an ไปแล้วในครั้งแรก (เนื่องจาก นามนั้นได้กล่าวไปแล้ว)
e.g.

• I went to a concert last week. The concert is too loud to hear anyone talking.

กรณีต่อไปนี้ จะไม่ใช้ article นำหน้า
นามนับไม่ได้ นามพหูพจน์ที่กล่าวขึ้นมาลอยๆ
e.g.   Employees should focus on their jobs
นามธรรม
e.g.   Honesty is what we should have
ชื่อ ทวีป รัฐ จังหวัด เมืองหลวง ถนน หมู่บ้าน เวลา มื้ออาหาร การเดินทาง
e.g.  in Asia, in Thailand, in Bangkok, at sukhumvit road, on Monday, eat lunch, by bus

ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้น ข้อยกเว้นก็มีมาก เช่น the United States, the alps, the Himalayas, the Nile, the Mediterranean, the Simpson Desert, the Galapagos Islands

เมื่อพูดถึงการไปสถานที่ๆ หนึ่ง จะไม่ใช้ a หรือ the เช่น

I went to university.
She goes to Church.
I want to go to bed.
They took him to hospital.

สิ่งที่จะทำให้คุณมั่นใจคือ ประสบการณ์ จากการอ่าน (reading) หรือได้ยิน (listening) ก็จะทำให้เกิดการใช้ที่ถูกต้องมากขึ้น
Trick: ในเวลาพูดถ้าไม่แน่ใจก็ ใส่ article ไปตลอด ผู้ฟังเข้าใจอยู่แล้วครับ
